Botox® vs. Fillers: Which Treatment Is Right for Me?

Few things are more frustrating than seeing wrinkles criss-cross your face. Fortunately, there are simple solutions. Here, we take a closer look at the most popular cosmetic treatments and help you decide which is right for you.

The good news is that you have more options than ever if you’re looking to overhaul your look. The bad news is that you have more options than ever.

That’s where our experts at Generations Family Practice Wellness Center come in.

We’re here to take the guesswork out of cosmetic treatments, so you can stay focused on what matters: discovering your most confident self. Here’s what you should know about Botox®, fillers, and other cosmetic injectables.

Botox in action

In the late 70s, researchers discovered that a derivative of the botulism toxin could safely paralyze small muscles in the face and included a cosmetic benefit because it eliminates the appearance of certain kinds of wrinkles caused by muscle contraction (dynamic wrinkles). Thus, Botox Cosmetic was born.

During your treatment, we use a very small needle to apply the injectable along each line or wrinkle being treated. We apply a numbing topical first, to keep you completely comfortable during treatment.

The paralytic agent in the injection effectively prevents the tiny nerves in your face from sending messages to your brain when you smile or frown. This reduces the appearance of those dynamic wrinkles and makes you look younger. The results can last up to a few months, and the injections can be repeated, as needed, to help you look your best.

But Botox isn’t the only injection available. Since Botox was invented, scientists have developed similar products. Dysport®, a cousin to Botox, is uniquely formulated to address the wrinkles in the glabellar area (the wrinkles between your eyebrows).

The 411 on fillers

You’ve probably heard the term hyaluronic acid (HA) anytime someone talks about the next best thing in cosmetics. That’s for good reason. HA is a natural substance found in your body that’s essential to helping your skin hold on to water and giving your skin its shape.

At Generations Family Practice Wellness Center, we offer two of the most powerful HA fillers: Juvéderm® and Restylane®. These two fillers have the highest concentrations of HA available on the market. We use them to address specific areas of the face, including around the mouth and lips and around the eyes for a smoother, younger-looking you.

Fillers work best against static wrinkles in your face, like lines from nose to mouth (nasolabial folds) and mouth to chin (marionette lines). When we inject the fillers into the problem areas of your face, they plump out the creases and reduce the look of these tell-tale signs of aging.

Fillers usually last a few months before your body starts to break them down and flush them naturally out of your system. Botox or Dysport and fillers can also be used together without ill effects, giving you a full range of facial rejuvenation options to mix and match for optimal results.
